Algorithms are instructions for solving a problem or completing a task. Recipes are algorithms, as are math equations. Computer code is algorithmic. The internet runs on algorithms and all online searching is accomplished through them. Email knows where to go thanks to algorithms. Smartphone apps are nothing but algorithms. Computer and video games are algorithmic storytelling.

Every day, millions of single adults, worldwide, visit an online dating site. Many are lucky, finding life-long love or at least some exciting escapades. Others are not so lucky. The industry—eHarmony, Match, OkCupid, and a thousand other online dating sites—wants singles and the general public to believe that seeking a partner through their site is not just an alternative way to traditional venues for finding a partner, but a superior way.
Is it? With our colleagues Paul Eastwick, Benjamin Karney, and Harry Reis, we recently published a book-length article in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest that examines this question and evaluates online dating from a scientific perspective. We also conclude, however, that online dating is not better than conventional offline dating in most respects, and that it is worse is some respects.
Indeed, in the U. Of course, many of the people in these relationships would have met somebody offline, but some would still be single and searching. Indeed, the people who are most likely to benefit from online dating are precisely those who would find it difficult to meet others through more conventional methods, such as at work, through a hobby, or through a friend.
Ever since Match. Singles browse profiles when considering whether to join a given site, when considering whom to contact on the site, when turning back to the site after a bad date, and so forth. The answer is simple: No, they cannot.

The aim of this seminar is to present and discuss some of the interesting recent algorithms and approaches in bioinformatics. In the first session of the seminar, we will provide an overview over the topics to be discussed in the seminar and then the topics will be assigned to the participants. Each participant will be provided with one or more papers on their topic. In addition, participants are expected to also survey the literature so as to identify additional papers that are useful for their topic.
Each participant will give a 25 minute oral presentation, followed by questions and discussion, and then feedback. Sessions will be chaired by a participant of the seminar. The quality of the writeup and the level of participation in discussions will used to push the grade up or down. Participation in all sessions is mandatory. To ensure a high quality of presentations and write-ups, each participant must discuss their presentation with their supervisor at least one week before the scheduled presentation.

Are we trapped in or inspired by algorithms?
Discourse about smart algorithms and digital social agents still refers primarily to the construction of artificial intelligence that reproduces the faculties of individuals. Recent developments, however, show that algorithms are more efficient when they abandon this goal and try instead to reproduce the ability to communicate.
The concept of communication should be reconsidered to take account of these developments, including or not the possibility of communicating with algorithms. Algorithms are social agents. Their presence and role are now central and indispensable in many sectors of society, both as tools to do things such as machines and as communicative partners. Algorithms are involved in communication not only on the web, where the active role of bots is now taken for granted, but also explicitly or not in more traditional forms, such as print communication and even voice communication.

Ben Berman thinks there’s a problem with the way we date. Not in real life—he’s happily engaged, thank you very much—but online. He’s watched too many friends joylessly swipe through apps, seeing the same profiles over and over, without any luck in finding love. The algorithms that power those apps seem to have problems too, trapping users in a cage of their own preferences.
So Berman, a game designer in San Francisco, decided to build his own dating app, sort of. Monster Match, created in collaboration with designer Miguel Perez and Mozilla, borrows the basic architecture of a dating app. You create a profile from a cast of cute illustrated monsters , swipe to match with other monsters, and chat to set up dates. But here’s the twist: As you swipe, the game reveals some of the more insidious consequences of dating app algorithms.
The field of choice becomes narrow, and you wind up seeing the same monsters again and again.

The main data from the structural examinations relating to the degree, location and extent of the damage is lost in the evaluation of the condition of the whole structure. The procedure used hitherto is not sufficient to ensure optimal preservation planning as part of a planned management system for structure preservation BMS.
The present report describes a new procedure for carrying out a detailed evaluation of the condition of bridge and civil engineering structures according to standardised criteria. The design of the procedure for condition evaluation was based on the tried and tested evaluations for individual areas of damage in order to take into consideration the specific information requirements of the Federal Government and the Laender regarding preservation planning and the specified framework conditions.
In addition to this a series of specifications are made in the programme system over which the tester has no influence: introduction of component groups in accordance with ASB, Teilsystem Bauwerksdaten;- mathematical evaluation of the condition of component groups taking into consideration a specified evaluation key; -mathematical evaluation of the condition of the total structure taking into account the evaluation of the condition of the component groups.
The programme system records in the report the assessment mark for the condition of the total structure. The marks for the condition of component groups are recorded internally.
